Cassava chips are produced from cassava which is cut into smaller sizes for processing and export. The process of cutting it down to such smaller sizes is called chipping.
Chipping Machine
In the chipping process, there is international, standard required for export hence, there is a standard chipping machine and the local chipping machine.
The standard chipping machine cuts the cassava into the required size while the local machine cuts it to any size. The cost of the machine is around $4,600,000 whether it is local or foreign, depending on the prevailing exchange rate.
The Peeling and the Washing
The cassava tuber is washed clean after it has been manually peeled. The next step is to pour into chipping machine.
The Chipping
The chipping machine which uses 10 horse power (hp) speed motor, comes with stainless blades to cut the cassava into chips. The blade of the machine will rotate against the back plate and the cassava will be chipped in the process. That is, it cuts the cassava into smaller sizes.
Drying
After the chipping, the chips will then be passed into the drying machine for drying. It is electricity-driven and the machine is adjusted to the size of the chips required.
Drying Machine for Chips
The function of the dryer is to reduce the moisture content of the chips to a certain standard depending on the use. Most times it is the cabinet dryer that is used because of its rectangular form for accommodation.
It has trays filled into compartments where the chips are poured. It is electricity-driven and regulated out the temperature of the sun which is between 27°C to 37°C.
It has heating element at the bottom which passes up the heat (hot air) and a fan which blows the heat across the compartment for even distribution of the air.
At the top of the dryer is an exhaustion value which sucks out the vapour so that the cassava does not get cooked but dried up.
Cost Analysis
A chipping machine costs about N600, 000. The least drying machine costs N500, 000.
